1) watch Shirin Neshat’s TED talk (ca. 10:30 mins.) on “Art in Exile” and take notes based on the following key questions:
*How did Neshat’s experiences as an Iranian woman artist impact her life and her ability to function as an artist?
*How does being an “outsider” to the dominant masculine, American and Iranian identities give her a special perspective as an artist?
*How does Neshat’s idea of the feminine perspective compare to our discussion of Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Judith and Holofernes?”
*In your opinion do Neshat’s experiences make it possible for her to create compelling and challenging art? Explain with reference to specific examples.
“Discuss the work of two women artists (from chapters 10-11)* and whether or not you believe they were able to bring unique perspectives to their work. Begin with a short (one sentence) statement defining your position (i.e. do you believe that they were or were not able to offer unique perspectives bases on their gender) followed by two case studies. Analyze an important theme in each artist’s work and try to make it clear specifically what elements (style, composition, iconography, etc.) of each example express something specifically related to their experience.”
