The case study assignment has two purposes. First of all, it is designed to make you think a little more about what a “real life” application of what we are learning in MODULE 4 would look like. SECOND OF ALL, it is also designed to help you review for Exam 4! It is designed to “wake you up” a little before Exam 4!!!

Some things you will need to do this case study:

Your notes from Module 4, specifically EKG notes and outpatient cardiac rehab notes

A partner or group – turning this in as a group is fine – just make sure that EVERYONE’s name is on it!!!

THIS IS DUE TO THE “HOLLY” DROPBOX BY FRIDAY, DECEMBER THE 4th at 11:30 pm!!!

A family friend “Holly” had been going to outpatient cardiac rehab in the area. She brings some recent EKG’s to you and wants to ask you about whether they’re doing the right thing. She feels like she’soverweight or obese. She has recently bought an Apple Watch that allows her to set alarms to tell her when her exercise intensity heart rate is too low or too high, but she has no idea what numbers to plug into it. She wants to know what heart rate range she should be exercising at to safely “work out” to address her obesity concerns.

Age: 50

EKG Section

Look at the EKG below. This EKG was taken while Holly was at rest. This resting heart rate is 80 beats per minute.

RESTING EKG

By the way, what would you “classify” this EKG pattern as? (What’s the “name” of this EKG pattern?)

You have Holly’s age (50 years old). What is her heart rate reserve (show your work!):

What is Holly’sPREDICTED Target heart rate range for “moderate” intensity exercise:

Minimum heart rate for MODERATE INTENSITY:

Maximum heart rate for MODERATE INTENSITY:

Now look at the EKG below. This EKG was taken while Holly was EXERCISING.

EXERCISING EKG – STATIONARY BIKE EXERCISE TEST AT CARDIAC REHAB – THIS HEART RATE IS 140 BEATS PER MIN

What majorEKG patternis occurring in herEXERCISING EKG? (What’s the “name” of this EKG pattern?)

Why would this be concerning? What’s happening here? LOOK IN YOUR NOTES

If this major concerning pattern is occurring at 140 beats per minute, what heart rate SHOULDshe exercise at when she is at heroutpatient cardiac rehab?  (LOOK IN YOUR NOTES – the suggested way to determine this answer is there)?

CASE STUDY SECTION

She is concerned that she is obese. For this stated concern, outline the basic AEROBICexercise prescription framework(s)/guideline(s) that would APPLY TO THIS SPECIFIC CLIENT and properly, safelyaddress this concern. You must be fully and properly specific to this client.  Failure to properly detail the basic prescription framework(s)/guideline(s) will adversely affect your grade!

Holly has loved to walk in the past. She has previously walked 2 miles, 4 times a week. Once she is considered a “stable” cardiac rehab patient, how many miles a week should she progress to?
