Death and the Maiden: A Parable Essay and Presentation Guidelines:
This assignment consists of two parts: 1) a 10-12 page group essay and 2) a 12-15 minute group presentation based off the material of the essay.
The essay and presentation can be based on
1) Evaluation and break down of characters.- Main focus DR Robert Miranda. Look at how character is developed and change over the course of the play. How does each individual develop, change, or embody Dorfman’s themes? How do we, the readers, come to understand what is at the heart of these characters? How do we come to understand their decision process, their internal thought process, even though it is revealed to us except through dialogue? Look to how the speaking style/dialogue changes for each character and to how much of the character is revealed to us by how others perceive them. The apparition of Roberto in the play, Roberto’s relationship with Gerardo, and what does Roberto symbolize for the society
2) Evaluation and break down of themes. First, identify the themes of this play, and then analyze how these ideas are presented to the reader/viewer. Are they associated with certain characters or scenes, certain plot or stylistic elements? Etc.
3) Evaluation and break down of critical scenes. How do these scenes reveal the important themes of the play? Are they crucial to a character’s development? To the highlight certain motifs or symbolism? Etc.
You will still need to incorporate commentary on Dorfman’s writing style. Look at how the play is organized, how dialogue, tone and attitude change from scene to scene, character to character, part to part. As always, go back to the terms from the start of the semester. Sound texture, paradoxes, ambiguities, etc. Look at the use of tone, diction, imagery, symbolism, motifs, character development and writing style. You should elaborate and support a central thesis statement. Use clear topic sentences to make sure each paragraph offers an interpretive claim on the play or the associated research.
You need to incorporate several items of research into your essay. This can include pieces of literary analysis, critical reviews of the play, and interviews with the author. Use the research to support your own conclusions and to elaborate on the literary elements at work in the text. You should have a minimum of four academic sources. The work itself needs to be on your Works Cited page, but it does not count as research. You must have a Works Cited page. This does not count as part of your minimum 10-12 pages
