Task

  • As you have learned in class and from the readings, an essay written in the Combining the Patterns mode makes an argument about a specific topic by combining/utilizing several types of writing structure throughout the essay.
  • In your essay, using a five-paragraph format, include:
    • Introduction (with thesis)
    • 3 body paragraphs
      • Cause and Effect
      • Comparison and Contrast
      • Argumentation
    • Conclusion
  • Be sure to craft and use a clear one-sentence thesis (like we’ve practiced) that introduces the topic and the three main points you plan to address as part of your argument about why X is a challenge in your community. Remember that a strong thesis will help make a strong essay.
  • Appropriate transition words always need to be added, too.
  • This final essay needs to definitively show your thinking and reasoning skills, so NO

Criteria

  • The body paragraphs should begin with topic sentences that directly relate to (and are in the same order as) the thesis points.
  • The body paragraphs should each use a different mode:1 – cause and effect, 2 –
  • comparison and contrast, 3 – argumentation.
  • The paragraphs must be well-developed with details that support the thesis and topic sentences. The thesis must be fully developed, and the sentences must be connected as a cohesive unit within the paragraphs, as well as the essay as a whole.
  • Clear, coherent sentences using standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Typed, standard MLA format (including in-text citations and works cited page)
  • Writing should be in third person (avoid first and second person pronouns as well as referring to vague groupings of people – e.g. I, me, you, we, us, etc.)
  • The finished essay must be at least 600 words. (There is no word limit, but essays need to be focused and concise.)
