Assignment Instructions:

Length:Your answer should be double-spaced in a font similar to the size on this page—Calibri 12 (or Times New Roman 12). Your essay should have regular 1 inch margins. Using the format given only, and without extra spacing, your assignment should be approximately 3-3.5 pages long maximum.

What to do:Please be aware that this is not a “five paragraph essay” with full introduction and full conclusion. Please follow the writing instructions for this assignment:

Page 1:Use your first page, and no more, to summarize the class handout permitted source “Polybius Histories Selections”. Your summary must be in your own words, and is to effectively convey the essential elements of the three-page single-space primary source in one page double-spaced with citations. Do not go over one page for your summary.

Page 2-3.5: Using the remaining 2-2.5 pages of your assignment, you are to make connections between the Polybius source and relevant materials—ideas and historical facts—from your Textbook Chapter 5. Suggestions for the kinds of connections to make include the following possibilities (you don’t have to do all of these, but do try for a variety of connections): areas where the textbook explains some of the details found in Polybius; examples from the textbook of the things that Polybius refers to; examples from the textbook that show any of the various powers, functions, restrictions, harmonies, dependencies, conflicts, or tensions that Polybius describes; examples from the textbook that show the Roman Republic political system working like Polybius says, or that show events or people’s actions to conform to or that are diverging from the ideal system that Polybius describes (such as where things “go wrong” from the system as set out by Polybius).
Each paragraph should include, correctly cited, ideas from Polybius along with detailed aspect(s) of the textbook you wish to make connections to, and with your clear explanations and your development of the connections you are seeing between Polybius and your textbook Chapter 5. You may also include, correctly cited, ideas from the permitted Synchronous Classes.

Permitted sources: Further details are posted at the Written Assignment #2 course area
