Create 1 scene with each of the elements above (setting, characters, action, sounds/smells, narration) using our course materials (textbook, and/or documentaries) that show something important that people should know about the development of Western Civilization.
You must include two equally important parts.
A description of each of the elements above (setting, characters, action, sounds/smells, narration).
An explanation of why those elements are important. “Importance” should be approached in 2 ways:
Historical importance: what of value does this scene tells us about something significant in Western Civilization?
Importance of elements portrayed: what do the details show? Why have you chosen to depict things this particular way?
You may explain the significance of each element one at a time (that is, describe the setting, then say why that setting is important; then describe the characters, etc…) OR you can describe everything first and then explain why it is all important. Either organization is fine. Just make sure both parts—description and explanation—are present. I have created a template you can download and follow to make sure you have the correct format.
You may employ a certain degree of poetic license. It is fine to depict characters in a way that might not be 100% historically accurate if it is necessary to convey your point within the confines of a brief scene. Make sure to acknowledge and explain your choice, however. Don’t go crazy. If you’re in doubt, please ask for guidance.
Although the ride starts in cave man days, our course does not. You must choose material that aligns with our course. That means anything from antiquity to 1648. The Renaissance, Reformations, and the Wars of Religion are the last topics that can be covered. No tv, internet, or moon landings. If you are in doubt about the appropriateness of an idea, please ask for guidance.
Disney rides have to be appropriate for children, but you don’t need to be bound by that restriction. If you want to show Alexander the Great burning a city to the ground, go ahead. Just keep it PG-13.
The target length is 3-4 pages. By target, I mean a little over or under is fine. 1 page is not. Neither is 6 pages. By the way, that’s double spaced, with 1 inch margins, and a normal 11 or 12 point font (like Calibri or Times New Roman).
Some courses require a formal cover page in APA style. I’m simple. I just need your name.
For citations, you can mention the works used at the end of the paper. You should only need materials used in the course, but if you want to go outside the course materials, a works cited page at the end is fine.
Note to Mac users: I cannot open files in the .pages format. Please make sure you convert to a Word file before submitting.
Finally, just to be clear: you do NOT have to create any kind of picture or image or artwork of any kind. A text-based description of what the scene should look like is sufficient.
