An essay can be divided into three parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
The first paragraph of an essay is the introduction.
The introduction moves from the general to the specific. It often begins with a hook to capture the reader’s attention. The hook is followed by some general statements on a topic. The introduction must also include a main idea, known as a thesis statement.
The body of an essay may consist of several paragraphs and includes information that supports the thesis statement. This information may be in the form of Statistics, Anecdotes, Facts, Examples, or Reasons (SAFER).
The last paragraph of an essay is the conclusion.
The conclusion begins with a restatement of the thesis statement. It often sums up important arguments, gives advice or an opinion, and leaves the reader with something to think about. The conclusion should contain key words and phrases from the introduction and body to unify the essay.
