a (roughly) 2000-word paper. In this paper you should adopt the character of a person interacting with a/the sacred mountain(s): e.g. a “shaman” of some region; a Daoist hermit; a Buddhist monk; a (perhaps prohibited) woman-pilgrim; a (present-day?) protector of the environment; a Shugenja ascetic. This requires imagination, but also knowledge of specific historical; cultural; “religious”; and regional/linguistic contexts. It should show both a general knowledge of “sacred mountains in East Asia” as well as a specific knowledge that your “character” possesses because of their particular role. Use at least 3 academic sources. You can include the textbook, the lectures, and one scholarly paper. Don’t use Wikipedia/Khan Academy etc as a source (even if you use it for background info). Cite everything!
