For your final paper, your will build off of your Rhetorical Artifact Paper by analyzing the text(s) that you identified. The purpose of this essay is twofold: 1) to help you gain a better understanding of your artifact through an analysis of its rhetorical appeals, and 2) to gain a more thorough understanding of a rhetorical theory by applying it to your artifact.
Your paper will consist of three parts:
1. A brief overview of your artifact’s “rhetorical situation.” This needs to be a shortened version of your first paper (note: simply cutting and pasting is not acceptable). You do not necessarily need to give a detailed account of the exigence, audience, and constraints, but you might find it useful to use these concepts to guide your thinking.
2. An explanation of your theoretical approach. Here, you will explain the rhetorical concept that you will use when analyzing your artifact. It can be any concept that we’ve used so far this semester. You may find it interesting to combine approaches, e.g., doing a narrative analysis in order to engage in an ideological critique. Whatever your approach, you need to explain what it is, how it works, and what it can tell us about your artifact. In this section, you must cite a minimum of 6 sources that explain the theory, its assumptions, how it can be applied, etc. Use the essays we’ve read this semester as examples for how to explain a theoretical approach (by now you should have a clear idea).
3. Analyze your artifact. This section should comprise at least half of your total paper.
Your paper should also (of course) have a clear introduction in which you state your thesis, and a conclusion.
Your final paper should run between 3000-4000 words (roughly 8-10 pages). Papers that are longer or shorter than this (even by a little) will receive an automatic penalty, so make good editorial choices. You will also need to include a correctly formatted bibliography (MLA or Chicago format is OK); your bibliography does not count toward your word count.
