Analyze a key concept, issue or problem related to the development of American culture in one or more of the works we have read this semester. Your topic may examine a specific author or figure we have studied, a specific question or an area of concern we have discussed as well. Be sure to narrow your focus to a topic that can be explored in-depth in 6-8 type-written pages. Your analysis should be guided by a specific thesis you intend to develop throughout the essay, and the paper must incorporate at least 6 different sources of evidence as a means of support. No more than one resource can be a true internet source—i.e., webpage, blog, etc.

All other sources must be traditional scholarly resources, although these sources may come from electronic databases available through the internet. Best essays will incorporate a mixture of primary and secondary resources. Primary resources are cultural artifacts (poems, prose, film, music) we have been studying. Secondary resources include scholarly articles, biographies and histories that examine the cultural artifacts that are your focal point.

Be careful to choose a thesis that explores a significant and original topic rather than one that merely summarizes a work or restates someone else’s argument. Also, be sure to include citations for all sources and a complete bibliography of your resources in a separate “works cited” page at the end of the paper.
