Appendix D Global Health Formal Paper
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to engage students in global health. The main aim is to conduct an investigation and analysis of a significant health issue that affects the global population. As a writing across the curriculum assignment, students must present current literature related to the problem and final outcome.
Instructions:
1. Student is to select an issue or topic that is related to global health, which has a cultural component. Examples might be water born illness, access to clean water, potential outcomes of the next pandemic, diabetes in developing countries or resource poor areas, infant mortality across the globe, the expected result in terms of health complications related to the predatory behavior of tobacco companies, education to disadvantaged/displaced groups, or many other topics. All topics must be approved by the faculty member.
2. Final product is to include a 10-12 page paper (APA format) that relies upon current literature and covers the following:
I. Introduction and Overview of the Issue
II. Background, Significance, and Problem Statement
III. Review of the Literature: review and analysis of currently available information and research
V. Cultural and Global considerations: Considerations to be addressed may include but are not limited to the following -What are the culture/s represented in this health issue? – How are the cultural differences expressed? – Are there any traditional health beliefs or healers that need to be consulted to address the issue? – Are there religious traditions and norms that must be taken into consideration? – What are the historical, geographical and/or economic barriers to resolving this problem?
VI. Impact Review: Expected impact of the problem on population health, local health care facilities, local economics, global economics, quality of life, long term sequela, and/or other pertinent considerations.
