Solon is without doubt my favorite figure in Greek history because the dude was hysterical and brutally honest in the face of power and the powerful. His way was the way of sophrosyne which is the Greek world for moderation. It takes a serious sense of humor to make it as a moderate (it is without doubt that we need an American Solon in America right now)! Read the following description of the life of Solon by Roman writer Plutarch and describe three ways that Solon used humor or brutal honesty to try to do the right thing (that’s another Greek concept, by the way, called philotimo) and describe how his actions reflect the idea of sophrosyne (moderation).
