Of course, now we know how not to plagiarize, even accidentally, and we will be documenting our sources in MLA format. And, if we can achieve the following in the FINAL draft, it would be truly excellent (B to A+ grades): we will use multiple sources to support our topic sentence in about half of our paragraphs, while using different techniques when writing our signal phrases and parenthetical citations.
Task: To prepare a research paper in which you propose possible solutions to a major environmental problem that is a threat to animals, or solutions that will save an endangered animal species.

Audience: Address this essay to an academic reader interested in thoughtful analysis of a contemporary ecological threat, particularly of a threatened or endangered wild animal species or habitat.

Length, Font, Format: Five to eight pages (not including the Works Cited page), typed, double-spaced, using one of the following fonts: (Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Ariel), size 12.

NUMBER OF SOURCES: for the Research Paper DRAFT : SIX sources minimum. For the FINAL Research paper, SEVEN sources minimum, with AT LEAST THREEPEER_REVIEWED Journal articles in the mix. 50% or more of sources used must come from the NVC Online Databases!

Follow the 8th edition MLA format for the entire paper, including for the use of in-text citations and their Works Cited page—these settings and requirements also apply to your rough drafts.

• OFTEN, YOU CAN EMAIL YOURSELF a copy of the research article from the NVC databases: do so! Then I prefer that you email me active links to your research that end up being used in papers for our course, but if that’s not possible, send me copies of the articles (or pics of the actual pages used in print or other format sources). True for sources you use in your research paper DRAFT, and then any additional research you use in your Final version. If you do not attach them at the same time as submitting a draft, simply EMAIL me the materials through our CANVAS Inbox in an attachment.
• And, for similar reasons—and because it is the standard when documenting your in-text citations—UNIFY/MERGE documented papers with their Works Cited pages so that you submit ONE file when you complete your assignment.

• You will also provide picture files of pages from any books you use as a source: wait until you write the paper, then take pictures or scan the actual pages you quoted, summarized, or referred to.

• The NVC online library databases must be used for AT LEAST HALF of your research: if you have problems using our databases, email me for guidance after first contacting the Research Librarian at NVC. If you have fewer than ten articles when writing the Research Draft, something is way wrong!

• Do research to:

1. Define the problem’s significance and structure (harms and causes).

2. Then to Evaluate two or three of the most important previous and current attempts to fix problem (laws, treaties, corporate initiatives, non-profit organization efforts—but select the most significant of these actions).

3. Then present your own reasonable solution to the environmental problem you are trying to solve (again, propose only very significant actions that would turn around the problem. You are not writing a pamphlet, so do not address your solutions to an individual: explain how the society or governments act in an organized way—laws, treaties, education campaigns funded by XYZ method at a level never seen before, etc.).

• You must NOT rely on unreliable sources such as Wikipedia, Answer.com, CliffsNotes, etc. as a source: trace back to the original sources from these subject overview sites. This kind of general, crowd-sourced sites MUST NOT BE USED IN YOUR PAPER AS SOURCES, even though they may aid in finding keywords, sources, and a general understanding of your subjects.
• Read that? Super important! Now it is a matter to take your evaluation of attempted solutions into consideration (writing TWO OR THREE PARAGRAPHS, at least, based on the Evaluation Ranked List Post), and then ADD at least THREE MORE paragraphs describing your Research Paper’s PROPOSED Solutions: tell us what you believe are the three or four key steps to save the ecological habitat or endangered species you researched.
You don’t have to re-invent the wheel: you can 1) take the FAILED Attempts at solutions you investigated in the Evaluation of Attempted Solutions & reasons for failure section of your Research Paper (Part II of the research paper outline), and then 2) PROPOSE FIXES so that those failing Attempted Solutions can turn into your PROPOSED future Successful Solutions!

This type of proposed solution is probably the path to SAVING the habitat or endangered animal you researched.

Of course, if you find a small attempted solution that worked in Idaho, you can propose to scale it up to a world-wide application—just make sure you decide WHO will implemented, and what must be done—The U.N.? A treaty of some kind? Whatever it takes, propose it!

There is NO need to PROVE that your proposals WILL likely happen for such a short paper as ours!You only need to be reasonable. If you find some important avenue toward a solution, include it in your proposed set of solutions—just don’t expect some single “magic bullet” to be convincing to readers after addressing the failures of very serious efforts to solve the environmental problem! For example, fusion reactors will not be ready for mass implementation in five years: in fact, were such fusion technology ready TODAY, we would need a transitional effort lasting fifteen, maybe twenty or more years!
