OK so you know you can’t use the polygraph, but the EPPA does not prohibit other kinds of honesty tests. And there are tons of them. But are they any good?
Find a free online honesty or integrity or ethics or personality test that has at least 8 questions and take the test. Don’t use one that makes you pay for the results.
Post a description of the test by answering these questions: (Please write in 1st point of view)
- what test did you take?
- do you think the test results represent you accurately? You don’t have to tell us the results if you don’t want to, but tell us how closely the test reflects who you are.
- would you rely on this test to determine a job applicant’s honesty or ethics? why or why not?
- what would be a better way to find out if an job applicant is honest and ethical?
Here is the eaxmple:
1. I have actually taken 3 tests for another HMD class: The Global Emotional Intelligence, HEXACO, and Myer-Brigg’s Personality Test.
2. I believe that most of the test results represent me accurately. However, I cannot conclude that all of the results represent who I am. Based on the HEXACO test results, it states that my strength lies in Conscientiousness which consists of organization, diligence, perfectionism, and prudence. In addition, it states that my weakness lies in eXtraversion which consists of social self-esteem, social boldness, sociability, and liveliness. I would say this is fairly accurate and whenever I take different tests, the results are very similar across.
3. No, I would not rely on this test to determine a job applicant’s honesty or ethics. There are numerous ways why it cannot be used as a determinant. First, the results will not be an accurate representation of oneself if he or she was aware that it will help with the hiring process. The results can be made in favor of the employer’s values and needs. By rigging the results, it already defies the concept of taking this test to illustrate honesty and ethics. Secondly, work ethics may change over time and may vary. The result will show the work ethics someone gained from past experiences. It may have been beneficial and highly regarded then, but a different employer may require different work ethics that are more suitable to their work environment. In addition, employers should not discriminate and let results affect one’s qualifications. It does not define who they can be or how they can make accommodations for the work place. For example, I may be an extreme introvert working in the hospitality industry, but am an extrovert at work. It is not who I am, but I have made the necessary adjustments to work efficiently for my guests and co-workers. Lastly, none of the tests are proven, but rather, based on case studies and research. This means that there are no definite conclusions and that the test can be taken multiple times in a period of time for new results as a person develops.
4. I believe that the best way to find out someone’s honesty and ethics would be through personal experience. You should not make assumptions or judgements prior to getting to know them. If you do hold bias against someone, it will most likely affect your perspective on the person because they will soon act like how you portrayed them to be. In addition, it may be good to hear feedback from the co-workers or immediate supervisor that the person works with. Honesty and ethics can be mended, but they are generally acted out unconsciously.
