How will the loss of net neutrality affect internet users?
How will the loss of net neutrality affect internet users? Net neutrality refers to the idea that all internet providers should supply information equally to everyone without any form of biasness (Finley 2). It implies that they should not block some data from reaching people while facilitating other materials to be easily accessed. The federal government has used a lot of resources to protect net neutrality. However, the debate has continued over the years, with some people advocating for censorship of information.
Several stakeholders have been involved in the debate. One of the significant stakeholders in the net neutrality topic is the federal communications commission that regulates the internet service providers. In 2015, a rule to control the internet service providers was passed by the senate (Finley 3). However, the federal communication commission felt that the law was limiting internet providers, businesses, and consumers’ creativity. Therefore, they want the regulations abolished and give the internet providers more freedom to act on their own.
The loss of net neutrality is therefore expected to have a profound effect on internet users. The internet is a widely used resource across the globe serving as today’s highway of information. Information censorship and filtering is a form of freedom breach to informational access rights. Serving as a universal interaction tool, no individual on the internet platform holds power over the other. Losing this freedom will only limit the possibility of realizing the full
potential of net neutrality. It is therefore continuously important to ensure that all relevant stakeholders should promote policies upholding the prevalence of net neutrality.
