Reflective writing about :
The incidence rate and the prevalence rate quantify the occurrence of disease cases for epidemiological study. The incidence rate is the rate at which new cases occur in a population during a specific time period, and allows us to determine an individual’s probability of being diagnosed with a disease within that specified time. It is the number of new cases diagnosed with the disease divided by the number of persons at risk for the disease (The BMJ, n.d.). The prevalence rate is the proportion of the population that are cases at any point in time. It is a measure of disease that allows us to determine a person’s likelihood of having a disease within a population. It is the total number of cases of a disease existing in a population divided by the total population (New York State Department of Health, n.d.).
When gathering and estimating prevalence and incidence data it is important that the studies include a sample large enough to capture all or most cases and distribute them both geographically and sociologically in order to provide an adequate representation of the general population. There are three main components to the organizing the data in studies of prevalence and incidence. First, assembling the cohort to study, sorting these people into affected and unaffected, then counting the actual number of people affected (Ward, M.M., 2013).
