Informative Speech

The informative speech is a “how-to” speech or a speech that “teaches or informs” the audience about the topic of your choosing. It can be as simple as how to make country lemonade, or a speech that informs the audience on the dangers of an inactive lifestyle, or even teaches the dos and don’ts of road-side emergencies, its up to you. The purpose of the speech is to get you to sharpen and or develop the specific skill set of researching and presenting data. You will need these skills for the next assignment.

1. Do a quick Google Search on the Author.
2. Organize your presentation.
   1. Introduction – Qualify the Author as a legitimate authority on the topic.
   2. Highlight the Topic.
   3. Explain the relevance of the topic according to the author.
   4. Illustrate how the author supported his/her claim.
   5. Conclude with what you took away from having read the article.

The assignment mimics the type of speaking that occurs most commonly in the academic setting. Students will have ample time to read, and learn to the best of their ability the article and present a 5 to 7-minute presentation on the facts of the article. Learning outcomes are: to read, understand, and speak on, and qualify sources as part of professional presentation. There is no formal outline due for this presentation. The selection of the topics will be guided by the instructor to eliminate procrastination and ensure academic rigors are being tightly adhered too. In the time allowed, summarize the selected article, but do not retell the article. What was the author’s stated purpose? Why did the author write the article? What qualifies the author as a credible source? And what evidence did the author provide to make her|his point?
