Literature by women

You will write a 5-7 page double-spaced essay on two of the readings. Note that this is not a research paper — I want you to draw from your own understanding of the readings. No outside sources will be permitted for this assignment, though you may use the historical and biographical information in the textbook. Your essay should have a clear thesis which you support throughout with textual evidence in the form of quotes and references from the readings.

Choose two works that deal with a similar theme or issue but are written at different periods and write an essay that examines the influence of the earlier work upon the later one. For example, you could look at Queen Elizabeth’s “Speech to the Troops at Tilbury” and discuss how that speech influenced Bradstreet’s poem about Queen Elizabeth. Or you might examine Wollstonecraft’s influence on Cady Stanton. Though this is not a research paper, for Option 2, do some cursory research to make sure that it is plausible that the later author would have been aware of the earlier author’s work.
