PART II – Independent and Dependent Variables

Now that you have operationalized the variable, develop two statements or hypotheses that show a relationship to another variable. That is to say, develop two statements that highlight a positive or negative relationship between the variables. For example, using truancy.

1. The farther away a student lives from school (distance) the more likely he or she is to be truant in the semester.

2. The higher the student’s GPA, the less likely it is that he or she will be truant in the semester.

Number 1 is a positive relationship between the IV and the DV. Number 2 has an inverse relationship between the variables.
