Asepsis means that an environment is free from bacteria, viruses, and other things that would cause contamination. It helps reduce infections in patients and prevents the spread of germs and disease.

In health care, there are two kinds of asepsis—medical asepsis and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis refers to maintaining a level of asepsis that helps prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and disease. In medical asepsis areas, people and objects are either clean or dirty—there’s no in between. To help maintain medical asepsis:

  • Wash hands frequently using the proper technique.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Cough or sneeze into the crook of the arm.
  • Separate dirty clothing from clean.
  • Don’t place clean or dirty linens on the floor.
  • Clean the least soiled areas first and then move on to the dirtiest areas.
  • Use appropriate barrier techniques to avoid spreading germs.

Surgical asepsis is the technique followed to ensure a sterile environment for surgeries. This means that everything in the environment—the room, the people, the linens, the instruments—must be free from all microorganisms.

To achieve surgical asepsis:

  • Only place sterile objects on a sterile field.
  • Use sterilized instruments and make sure they aren’t touching one another.
  • Don’t talk, cough, or sneeze over a sterile instrument environment.
  • Hold instruments above the waist.
  • Open sterile instrument packages away from your body so that they don’t touch your clothing.
  • Don’t use liquids that can be spilled around sterile environments or instruments.

If you’re unsure whether an instrument is sterile, be cautious and assume that it’s not.

Surgeries and Procedures Performed in Medical Offices

Due to advancements in technology, instrumentation, and techniques, more surgeries and procedures are being performed in physician offices than ever before.

The types of surgeries done in medical offices will vary based on the physician’s specialty. Some surgeries performed in outpatient settings include

  • Electrosurgery
  • Laser surgery
  • Colposcopy
  • Cryosurgery
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Incision and drainage
  • Vasectomy

It may be the medical assistant’s job to set up the room and equipment for procedures and even to assist with some of them.

Medical Emergencies and Emergency Preparedness

Physician offices can handle most nonemergency situations during regular hours, but oftentimes patients require care outside of regular office hours. Patients who have medical emergencies can go to

  • Hospital emergency departments
  • Freestanding emergency clinics
  • Physician after-hours clinics

In some cases, patients may need care at their home or at the site of an accident. In these cases, first responders such as EMS or paramedics provide care until the patient is transported to the healthcare facility.

A primary assessment is one of the first things that should happen when a patient comes into the healthcare facility. The clinician performs a primary assessment by asking the patient questions and then performing a basic examination. The primary assessment will help determine what kind of intervention the patient needs. It will help determine if the condition is

  • Life threatening
  • Non-life-threatening, but needs immediate intervention
  • Non-life-threatening, but needs intervention as soon as possible

As a medical assistant, it may be your job to assist with emergencies at the office, keep patients calm, and organize the room and materials needed to treat the patient. Some emergencies that medical assistants may encounter in the office include

  • Respiratory arrest
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Insulin shock
  • Diabetic coma
  • Respiratory distress
  • Chest pain
  • Shock
  • Bleeding
  • Wounds
  • Burns
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Hypothermia or hyperthermia
  • Seizures
  • Fainting
  • Musculoskeletal injuries

Emergency preparedness means that your office tries to be ready for any sort of disaster that strikes. This kind of preparedness doesn’t just mean being prepared for medical issues, it also means being prepared for natural and manmade disasters and catastrophes such as the following:

  • Earthquakes
  • Tornadoes
  • Fires
  • Floods
  • Hurricanes
  • Terrorism
  • Environmental exposure

If disaster strikes when you’re working in a healthcare environment, you’ll not only need to worry about yourself and the employees, but you’ll also need to be concerned about the patients. This is different from other office environments, because your office may be dealing with sick people during a disaster. Additionally, your office may be receiving victims of the disaster.
