Music, society and culture Concert Report

CONCERT REVIEW/REPORT—DIRECTIONS

  1. Each student is required to submit two (2) Concert Reports/Reviews. If you are in any doubt about whether your choice of concert will count for the class, please email me directly BEFORE viewing the concert and writing your paper.
    1. Your concerts must be of Classical music. One must be of a large, conducted ensemble, such as a symphony orchestra. The other can be another large ensemble concert or something smaller, such as a solo recital or a string quartet concert.
    2. Concerts can be selected from links listed on the assessments/assignments page resources – these will be available in the third week of classes. You may also find other online concerts but….make sure that they are full length concerts (typically one hour or more in length) and that they are of Classical music – not jazz or world music, for which there are other GSU classes.
    3. You cannot use a concert in which you performed for this assignment.
    4. You may write in the first person. You may also write this either as an essay or a review.
    5. Correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar are essential. One point will be deducted for each mistake noted.
    6. Concert reports /reviews must be at least two full (2) pages long, typed single spaced in 12 point font with 1” margins. Your paper/s should not start half- way down the first page. I need A MINIMUM OF two FULL pages for each one. For class, instructor and title details, you must use a cover page. You must submit your papers as Word documents.
    7. There are 100 points available for each final paper (see also 4.a below).
  1. All reports are due on the following dates by 11.59pm EST:
  1. It will be expected that the student will attempt to locate information for the report either from the program notes given at the concert (either onscreen prompts about the music, or in the video description) or in our textbook (even if we have not studied the concept yet—for example, the typical make-up of a solo concerto). Highlighted/bold terms in the text can be very helpful. Do not copy any concert information verbatim! (plagiarism) When you view the concerts, please take copious notes – the more the merrier. That way you will have something (or lots of information) to work from when compiling your final document.

Keep a notebook for the concerts (or a file) and keep detailed notes so that you will be able to type the information needed following the concert. The following may help in collating your notes:
