Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker
The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?
Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.
In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

The Application of Data to Problem-Solving
The use of data to make an informed decision is imperative in any career. In healthcare, the need is also critical for some scenarios requiring data to establish a solution to a condition. This instance is a situation that data was needed for proper health services, but since it was lacking, it got out of hand. A patient known as Richard developed some condition and could not travel to the hospital; thus, it required a nurse or a doctor to visit him to administer healthcare. The process of diagnosing and evaluating him was done at his home. The process continued for a significant amount of time until Richard died from his condition. The problem now arises of why Richard died with the constant monitoring and delivery of health services. There was no day a physician never went to see Richard.
The same situation availed itself again for another patient who was advanced in age. His treatment method was suggested to be like Richard’s since he could not travel to the hospital in the required frequency. So the problem arises due to the criticality of this new patient condition. He is on the verge of death, but the patient has been receiving ongoing treatment from observation. Therefore, there must be some missing information about the patients who are treated at home (Ellenbecker et al., 2018).
From the observation of these two scenarios, it can be established that the patients are worsening due to a lack of their previous medical information. There are no tracking and predictive data that could inform the doctors of the conditions of the patients (Dash et al., 2019). Therefore, physicians cannot accurately establish what the problem was with the patients. This whole ordeal could have been evaded if the hospital had implemented telemedicine. There could be a provision of pre-existing information of the patient hence faster diagnosis and evaluation of a patient. (Author, 2018) Therefore, home treatment should be equipped with telemedicine for home patients’ data provision in our health center.
A nurse leader might use the information from telemedicine to find out if a patient is worsening or not. Also, the information is imperative to ensure that the judgment is right when a nurse decides a condition. Therefore, from this experience, a nurse leader will ensure that they have beforehand necessary information concerning a patient before delivering a medical plan.
