“THE WORDS” movie

As you watch The Words, complete the questions under the instructions.

1. Format your paper in MLA style, and entitle your paper, The Words.You must have a correctly formatted header and a heading.
2. Answer each question in sentence form. You will number your responses to match text evidence and an in-text citation, but no Works Cited page is required.
3. Remember to maintain a reader-centered approach to writing. This means that the reader does not have to read the original work to understand what you are saying. Use the guidelines in Chs. 1 and 2 of They Say, I Say to accomplish this. Also, use nouns and names in place of pronouns to aid in clarity. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you have identified all people and nouns by name before replacing those nouns with pronouns.

Answer the following questions:

1. Since it is clear that the real author of the book did not want fame or money from his lost manuscript, what appears to be the purpose behind his confrontation with Rory?
2. What did Rory’s plagiarism cost him?
3. In what way is cheating on a test or on an essay assignment in the classroom similar to the cheating done by Rory in this story? How are they different?
4. Is there anything that Rory could have done to redeem himself? What were they? Did they include writing an alleged “novel” about what he did and what happened to him as a result but not admitting that it was autobiographical?
5. What prevents Rory from revealing the truth to his wife when she first reads the manuscript?
6. How could Rory have admitted his plagiarism and continued to write?
7. Why did Rory’s plagiarism and the refusal to admit it and give up its benefits poison his marriage?
