I found writing the Unit 1 essaya lot easier than writing this academic essaybecauseforthe personal essayI only had to worry about including my thoughts and experiences. This time around, I had toread and interpret works from other authors and then figure out how to weave in thatinformation with my own thoughts. When trying to come up with an approach that would work best for me to write this essay, I spent a lot of time pondering several different options. Eventually, I decided it would be best to use course readings with which I could relate and apply their meanings to my own life. This way, I had a better chance atcorrectly interpreting the readings and picking out a larger idea to build upon with my own experiences.

Because I had many conflicts with myself right from the beginning stages of this essay, I recognized that it was necessary to put in more effort than usual in order for meto produce work thatwould meet the assignment criteria.Although I did not have a specific focus for the entire paper yet, I did have a vague idea of the type of message I wanted to send throughthe use of my own words, as well as the words of other authors. I knew that I was aimingfor something heavily related to the intimacy of language and the significance of the role played by one’s familyduring the formation of language. As I went through the entire writing process, I made sure to include ideas that I felt could potentially have some type of relation. I decided that I would revisit them once I had gotten at least one other person’s opinion because I had hope that someone else would see the problem with my paper and give me advice on how to fix it.

Because I was aware that my paper lacked a larger idea, I looked forward to receiving critique that would guide me in the right direction andIwanted to take note of all the advice and suggestions I was given. The feedback I received from my instructor drew my attention to many possible ideas that could be used to connect all of my information together, so I found the individual conference session to be very beneficial. When it came time for peer review sessions, my peer gave my paper a positive evaluation, along with a few suggestions about which areas could be improved and how I could add finishing touches to complete my essay. While the feedback did give me reassurance about the quality of my work, it also made me feel pressured to meet expectationsand even go the extra mile to make it as perfect as possible. I began to overthink and at one point I considered scrapping my entire essay to choose another topic, becauseI found myself stuck in one place and I couldn’t figure out where to go from there.I jotted down several notes that would hopefully get me to see things in a brighter light, but I just ended up staring at them for days – until I finallycame to a conclusion about what my larger idea would be. The answer had been in front of me the entire time, the information was all there and all I had to do was find out how to piece the puzzle together.

Looking back on the entire process I went through, I realizejust how much I struggled with finding the direction I wanted this essay to take and I am amazed that I was even able to complete it. It is challenging enough for me to get my thoughts onto paper, soattempting to decode another person’s work and fully grasp the meaning made this assignment all the more difficult. However, I did find writing this essay enjoyable because I chose to zero in on ideas that I had a lot to say about. Iwas at an advantage because I could put myself in the authors’ shoes and see things from their perspectivesdue to the fact that I have been in positions similar to theirs. Once the idea I had been searching for became clear to me, everything else fell into place.
