Hello class!
The article that I found was in regards to a patent verdict where Caltech wins $1.1 billion against apple and Broadcom. According to the article, Apple was required to pay $837.8 million and Broadcom was ordered to pay $270.2 million over patents related to wireless data transmission. There has been a history of allegations against apple in the past regarding other patents. Over the last 10 years, Apple has managed to evade a $533 million lawsuit over microprocessor technology and a $625.5 million verdict in regards to the display of documents.
Apple has been accused of being a bully to other major research companies. The article stated that Apple had stolen health-monitoring technology from Masimo Corp, which is a medical device maker.
There is not debate that Apple is one of the largest technology producers in the world. In a market such as technology there is always the potential for lawsuits based on product development or who is using it for what purposes.

Emilia:
I would like to start off this post by defining intellectual property. Intellectual property is a creative work or invention, that is able to be protected by patents, trademarks, trade names, copyrights, and trade secrets (Geringer et al., 2016). Each country has its own way of upholding patents. In the United States, for example, the first inventor has the right to the patent (2016). This week, I chose to read a recent article about Google from CNBC, titled: Google says it will pay some news publishers to license content, bowing to regulatory pressure.
In this article, I learned that antitrust regulators in France and Australia were calling for Google to finally pay for the quality news content it hosted (Browne, 2020). This is also important since publishers are dealing with a decrease in advertising expenditure due to COVID, and Google was notorious for hosting news content, caching it, and hosting it on its own. By now paying publishers to license their content, Google will be providing the legal rights to the publishers who deserve it. According to the United States, the publishers’ content is rightfully theirs and they can monetize their content without Google profiting off of it.
