I wanted to provide this space to put writers and writing into a specific context. Writing is an art form–and I’d suggest there are very fine yet clear lines between intentions in writing. Some write to inform, others to entertain, and others to create literary art (and this usually is where we get into what’s called literary fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction). Some writers are motivated by making money, and are writing for hire, or doing writing on contract or commission. I feel like in our popular culture, lots of writing we encounter is market driven, so the intention is to sell us an idea or a product or a point of view. There are lines, like I said, and we are hopefully learning to recognize where those are with tools like the Rhetorical Situation.
