Ethical dilemmas

This assignment is in four parts. First, select a case from the course handout “Professional Ethics – Dilemmas.” You do not need to repeat the case, you can simply summarize it or refer to the handout. Second, explain Aristotle’s ethical theory. Third, using that theory, make a recommendation for a course of action in the case you have selected. Finally, consider one objection to that recommended course of action and provide a response to the objection.

Written assignments are due by 11:59 pm Eastern time on Sunday. They need to be 2 pages double spaced, include citations where appropriate and refer to and incorporate the material in the text book and other sources.

this is the case I selected : You are in middle management in an insurance firm. In a routine audit, it turns out that your department is above both the national and company averages for claims processed and pay outs. You carry out an inspection and it seems that one of your employees, Sally, has processed somewhat more claims per year than the rest of her colleagues. You hire a private detective to investigate and he reports within 24 hours that he has found at least 10 claims where checks were sent to non-existent addresses. These checks were returned to the company and cashed by Sally. He was even able to sweet-talk a clerk at the bank to showing him one of the checks and Sally’s handwriting was on the back, endorsing it. You call Sally into you office and confront her with the evidence. To your amazement she cheerfully admits it, and that you are not the first company where she pulled the scam. But, she says, if you try to prosecute she will create a huge court case out of the fact that you hired the private detective and invaded her privacy. She will make you and the company look like fools. On the other hand, if you will write a nice letter of recommendation, she will leave and find a

job at another company. And, she adds, don’t even think about writing a nice letter and then blackballing her by calling other insurance companies. That is illegal and she will sue.
