Choose one of the mentally ill people in the first video clip and describe the ways that you think the police officers who intervened in the life of this person responded to the situation in an effective and/or ineffective manner.
In the second video clip there is some discussion about deinstitutionalization. How has deinstitutionalization contributed to the incarceration rate of the mentally ill? What are the political aspects of this issue?
Why do you think that we have more mentally ill people in prison than in hospitals?
Do you think that there is enough attention being given to the social problem of mental illness among those who are apprehended by the police and those who are behind bars? Why or why not?
How do you propose that we might solve the social problem of the incarceration of the mentally ill?
