No repliDiscussion – Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood
Preliminary Instructions
For this discussion, you will be reaching a “hot topic” in adolescence & young adulthood and then discussion its application both real life and to your hypothetical child.
First:
Pick a topic related to issues in adolescence.
Here are some examples of topics to help you brainstorm:
Substance Abuse
Peer Pressure/Fitting In
Influence of Social Media or Technology
Teen Pregnancy
Sex and Drug Education (e.g., what are we doing and are we doing enough?)
Teens in Gangs/Juvenile Delinquency
Teen/Young Adult Depression and/or Suicide
Bullying/Cyberbullying
Self-Esteem and Body Image Issues
Academic Problems/High School Dropout
Identity Formation – Sexual and/or Gender Identity, Career/College path, Religious/Spiritual identity, etc.
These are just some suggestions, you are welcome to use one of these or you can choose ANY topic that you feel relates to issues facing adolescents and young adults today that interests you! Just be sure the topic abides by the code of conduct and expands on the material from the text/course material!
Second:
Once you’ve selected your topic, find at least one (more if needed or desired) reliable resource that discusses the topic in detail. See note below** Then complete the instructions for the write-up.
Instructions
Initial Post:
Based on the information from the course materials and your additional resource(s):
PART 1: Discuss the topic.
Using the course material and the article(s) you located, thoroughly explain the issue and how it is affecting teens/young adults today. Discuss any concerns, challenges, statistics, consequences of the current practices, etc. worth noting.
PART 2: Apply the information.
Imagine your hypothetical child, who is now a teen or young adult, comes to you and expressed concern about the issue you researched and discussed in Part 1 and address the following…
What would you want your child, and other teens/young adults, to know about the issue, how would you explain and educate them about the topic?
What would you suggest can be done to help your child to avoid long-term consequences from these issues or to help manage or control the issue to avoid future long-term negative consequences? In what ways would you, as the parent, help your child? What resources/programs would you seek out, if any?
What would you like to see teachers, schools, society, etc. do to help your child, and other teens/young adults to help support them with this issue?
Connect to the course concepts and the research from the article(s) you located and apply them as appropriate. Put the course concepts in Bold so they stand out.
Cite your additional resource(s). APA style is preferred but I’m not that picky as long as you provide the citation and resource information (I will automatically deduct points if resources are not included).
**PLEASE NOTE** Your additional resource(s) should be reliable, meaning they come from a scholarly source. I recommend you look up scholarly articles from the Moorpark College Library online, or use sources like Google Scholar. Be sure it’s a full article, not just a summary or abstract. Sites like Wikipedia are not considered reliable, however you can often use their references section as a good jumping off point! Be sure you properly cite your source.
