Civil Society is a complex realm. For starters, there is no common definition of it and yet, people have historically fought to be included within it. The Civil Rights movements has a long genealogy, one that we are now learning begins further back than the 1950s. This movement fought for the recognition of the inherent rights of the historically exploited – black, poor, women etc – to become fully recognized as equal participants with the same civic responsibilites. However, not all of it was uniform or linear. What were some of the different strategies of the different civil rights organizations? Did they different ideologically ( in understanding what was wrong with society and how it needed to be resoloved)? Lastly, how does Theoharis and Woodard research complicate the dominant narrative?
