Infographics. Infographics are visual representations of knowledge and/or data designed to present that information quickly and clearly to the intended audience. Infographics popularity has exploded or the recent years and have evolved with the help of various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) and as such infographics are designed with fewer assumptions about the readers’ knowledge base than other types of visualizations used in science studies. Infographics have been around for many years and recently the increase of a number of easy-touse, free tools (i.e. Canva.com) have made the creation of infographics very easy. Infographics should: · present the data quickly and in a visually pleasing way · the audience should respond to the message and not the graphics or production quality · avoid misrepresenting or distorting what the data suggests · reveal the story being told on several levels, from a broad overview to the specifics · serve a clear purpose: description, exploration, tabulation, or decoration

 

Organization. When putting together your infographic, think about the specific question or problem you’re addressing. You won’t be able to address, for example, cancer in a single infographic. But you could focus on a treatment, for example trastuzumab. Once you have your problem, think about background information (how do monoclonal antibody therapeutics work), and then results/data/conclusions.

• Topic :The topic of the infographic is specific in nature and is intended to inform the viewer.
• Content:The topic is explored with depth and illustrates the chemistry at a general chemistry level
• Type :The type of infographic chosen (i.e. timeline, informational, etc.) highly supports the content being presented.
• Objects :The objects included in the infographic are repeated to support various data points and to make it easier for the viewer to understand the infographic
• Data visualizations :The data visualization formats chosen to make the data presented easy for the viewer to understand the information.
• Fonts: The infographic includes an appropriate font to both complement the content and make the text readable.
• Colors: The color choices enhance the visibility of the infographic. Different saturations of the same color are used wisely.
• Layout:The layout of the infographic adheres to the inverted pyramid style – main point on top, secondary point next, and supporting details at the bottom.
• Information organization:The infographic utilizes one of the LATCH (location, alphabetical, timeline, category, or hierarchy) information organization formats to allow the viewer to understand the information in the infographic.
• Citations :Full bibliographic citations for all sources used are included.
