Writing your theory of change is an opportunity to look deeper into a topic or issue that
causes issues in couples’ relationship. This APA style paper will not exceed 6 pages in length.

You will spend time describing a problem that couples face, why it matters, its pathology
(theoretically how it develops), how to heal the issue (using a specific model), and what your
part as a therapist or counselor would be working within your model. Each piece needs to be
supported by empirical research or evidence. Keep in mind this paper is about changing the
relationship and not the specific individuals. The key here is that your focus is on systemic
principles that impact the relationship. You will not be discussing how individuals change within
the relationship but rather how the relationship changes in unhealthy and healthy ways. You will
be asked to draw upon and cite the relevant literature specific to theory and models for marriages
and couples counseling (CACREP 5F1c). You will need to show a depth of thought when it
comes to explaining how couples change. You must use APA format.

The theory of focus is Systems theory, so to be looked at through a systemic lens
