Topic
The paper is on a Jewish gender topic of your choice. It can be a topic we covered in class, or something completely different. Research your topic and craft a thesis about it. Your research may draw on class sources (if relevant) but should include at least 3-4 outside sources as well. The thesis may involve your topic’s role in Jewish thought, its role in modern or pre-modern life, its relationship to non-Jewish gender constructions, some combination of these, or something else relevant. Be sure that part of your paper reviews the topic’s history in the Jewish tradition. In other words, show your knowledge about context and tell me in what Jewish texts and parts of Jewish history your topic appears and about the main perspectives regarding it, if applicable.
Character
This is a thesis-driven paper. It should make the main claim (thesis), located at the end of your first paragraph. The thesis shows the reader where your paper will go, like a road map that you consult at the beginning of a journey. The rest of the paper should support this claim with textual evidence and analysis. Remember, each part of the paper should support your thesis. Think of yourself as a lawyer making a case. You must make your argument, present evidence for it, and contextualize/interpret the evidence to win your case.
Citation (for all parts of the assignment)
The textual evidence should include several direct quotations, each with a citation. When you give a piece of information that is not commonly known, you should cite your source for that as well. If you use a website, you must cite that too. Use Chicago Style. That is the style used in Religious Studies. You must provide footnotes OR endnotes, AND a bibliography. See the bibliography guide at the end of this document for basics.
This paper should include a bibliography of 4-7 items and AT LEAST 2 of them need to be from sources we did NOT use in class. You cannot use Jewfaq.com as it is not a reliable source
