Peace-keeping country

From the 1960s through the 1980s, the Canadian public’s attention to the country’s military commitments focused mostly on international peace-keeping (mediation) missions. Since the 1980s, Canada has used military force in four ways: a) to fight violence within Canada, b) to help maintain order within Canada, c) to serve as peaceful mediators to help keep foreign conflicts from re-starting, and d) to go to war against armed forces outside of Canada. Discussing contemporary examples of each of these four uses of military power (between 1980 and 2020), argue whether the idea of Canada as a ‘peace-keeping country’ is still a valid characterization Canada’s use of its military moving into the 21st-century.
