In paragraph one, provide a general description of what public health is, in your own words and how you believe public health is important to society and wellness. It is acceptable to provide a single quote, or 1-2 sentences of paraphrased information that is properly cited using in-text citations and references in AMA format. Aim for 6-8 sentences in this paragraph.

Public health is “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals”.1 Public health is investigating coronavirus outbreaks, providing car seat safety education classes to first time caregivers, and advocating for social justice. Public health is about the prevention, improvement, and reduction of physical and mental health outcomes affecting populations. Most importantly, public health is about service. It’s about providing service to our families, communities, and those most in need in order to eliminate health disparities and create health equity.

In paragraph two, explain how public health relates to your own discipline and the careers you are interested in. Specifically, identify the concentration/discipline on which you intend to focus your MPH degree. Again, you need to use primarily your own words when writing this essay, being careful to cite any form of outside sources or ideas. When providing empirical support or outside ideas that anything you reference is carefully cited and referenced using AMA formatting. Failure to cite is a form of plagiarism. Be sure to expand on your career goals in this paragraph. You can present the story of your pathway to public health in this section, if your career goals remain a central part of that story. This section should be 8-10 sentences and may be 1-2 paragraphs.

My interest in public health began when I was working as an after school program leader at Gordon J Lau Elementary School in San Francisco, California in 2011. I volunteered to teach a program called WE CAN! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition). During the program, I realized the importance in the implementation of community education as a way of prevention. I witnessed the students and their families increase their healthful food intake and increase physical activity by the end of the program. Witnessing their accomplishments inspired me to change my career path.

After relocating from San Francisco to Los Angeles, I enrolled in community college and took supplemental courses to enhance my knowledge of public health. At that time,I volunteered and worked for various non-profit organizations. I had the opportunity to educate youth and adults from diverse backgrounds on topics such as drug abuse prevention, age-appropriate sex education, physical activity/nutrition, resume and cover letter writing.

In 2012, I attended the Indigenous Health Leadership Institute hosted by the Native Health Initiative in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Not only did I learn about Native health perspectives and culture, but I practiced their primary source of funding-loving service. Loving service is the willingness to help family and community members without expecting anything in return. Participating in the health institute and interning to Planned Parenthood Los Angeles reassured me that I wanted to focus on women’s /maternal, infant, and child health.

Currently, I am working as a Parent Educator for the Whole Child (non-profit). I am employed under the Parent Enrichment department which provides home visiting services to expecting mothers and to families with children up to 3 years old. Families are visited twice a month and provided PAT (Parents As Teachers) activities to enhance parent-child interaction, attachment/bonding. Not only do I have the opportunity to implement the curriculum, I postpartum doula services, lactation education, family planning, car seat safety education, infant massage and screenings for primary caregiver and target child. The screening are to screen for postpartum depression and early developmental delays in children. It supports families by providing physical/metal health education, child development, and prevents childhood abuse and neglect.

My career goals are within the field of women’s health/maternal, infant, and child health. I would like to help educate women about their family planning options and provide education to reduce maternal and infant health mortality rates. Most importantly empower the communities I will serve with knowledge. Education has always been a passion of mind. In addition to providing health promotion education, I would like to teach at my local community college.

In your final paragraph, discuss ideas for where you would like to pursue your practicum, topics that you may be interested in learning about, and any questions that you may have related to your MPH degree. This last paragraph will help us provide you with appropriate academic and career guidance at the beginning of your program. Additional questions that may arise throughout the program can be sent.

The topics of interest include maternal, infant and child health, nutrition, and disease prevention. I want to enquire that despite not being in the global health concentration, will I be competent to complete my practicum hours abroad? I have missed the opportunity to apply to study/work abroad out of fear failure. Since the pandemic, I reflected and realized that life is too short to not take risks. If possible, I would like to pursue my practicum abroad. If opportunities are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, I would be interested in pursuing my practicum in a health care setting, a local government, or with a research team. I do not have experience in the areas selected. I would like to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone as it would benefit my personal and professional growth. Is it possible to work while completing my practicum hours? Other than that, I do not have any questions at the moment. Support with conclusion please.
