INSTRUCTIONS:
This assignment is a Leadership and Management exercise. As the student, you will interview a nurse leader. Listen to the following podcast on some of the challenges of alternative staffing for managers and their leadership. This podcast (about 11 minutes) is an interview with Dr. Anne Dabrow Woods, Chief Nurse of Wolters Kluwer Health Learning, Research & Practice, adjunct faculty for Drexel University, and a critical care nurse practitioner for Penn Medicine, Chester County Hospital. The discussion is around COVID-19 and the resulting surge of patients overwhelming the healthcare system and how managers are dealing with staffing and how it is affecting their leadership.
Learning Objectives:

Student assignment:
• The student will interview a nurse leader (nurse manager, nurse leader, nurse administrator) during clinical experience or in a work experience you may have outside of clinical. This meeting can bevirtual. Questions can be emailed to the manager, nurse leader or nurse administrator.
- The student will write a synopsis of the answers provided in a paper.
- The paper should be a minimum of 2-3 pages and be typed, the student is to observe rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation and demonstrate a good writing style
Directions:
The student is to interview the nurse leader with the following questions so that the student can describe the processes which occur in the clinical setting related to the learning objectives.
- To what extent do nursing staff of this unit support patient-centered care ofindividuals and families whose values differ than their own? What are the barriers supporting this fully? How can it be improved?
- Describe the nursing and inter-professional teams that operate on this unit.
- Provide an example of a nursing practice that has been changed in the last year based on current best evidence. Did COVID play a part in the change?
- Provide an example of how an unwanted variation that occurred within the last year on the unit changed practice and improved or did not improve patient outcomes. This could have occurred with staffing demands due to the COVID pandemic and how the leadership of the nurse leader handled this.
- How are national safety guidelines implemented on this unit? Is this part of the CDC guidelines?
- What are the two main issues with the Electronic Medical Records on this unit or have there been no issues.
