Tattoos

Choose a tattoo you or a friend has (respecting social distancing, ask for picture to be virtually delivered) and describe the tattoo as if the person reading will never see it (you may choose to upload a .jpg in your paper, or not). Why did you or your friend choose the image and where was it placed? What personal significance does it have? Does it represent an experience, if so, what? Why? Also, feel free to try to unravel often gendered or cultural (eg class) stereotypes (for example, “tramp stamp” or “chest plate” or “sleeve” etc). The point of this is to uncover the aesthetic choices in these choices and connect them to broader themes. One thing I have been thinking about is face and scalp tattoos, such as these by Rancid’s (I love this band full disclosure) Tim Armstrong (link)and Lars Frederickson (link). How does the average person respond to such prominent placement of body modification. How does this function in non-Western countries? Or what about Japanese Yakuza tattoos (link)?
