Trusting the Wrong
As a humbled Italian wealthy man full of life, always been there for his acquaintances, Fortunato living his life drinking wine and be around people was what defines him. Similarly known for his trust for other people marked his life. Montresor was Fortunato’s masked friend; Poe describes him as a jealous, intimidating evil man seeking revenge. The author brings the importance of trusting and not knowing what to expect in life.
As the story unfolds, Montresor had so much anger towards Fortunato, and this made him take him to the vaults to taste a wine he had bought called “Amontillado.” Aware of his passion for wine, he knew he was easily persuaded to lead him to the vaults. Even though he was not feeling well, Fortunato insisted on going. Montresor stated, “My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre”. This is how he wrapped his plan. (pg2) His plan was already insight, and he continued as if nothing, from how drunk Fortunato was, he never suspected what awaited him. Here the author gives you an idea that revenge is yet to come; at the outset, Poe describes that Montresor is tired of the ridicule. Apparently, Montresor wants to do something terrible to his friend. When they arrived at the house, Montresor had already warned the servants not to be at home. Something weird, right? The story gets exciting and intriguing after this. Fortunato continues at the foot of reaching the wine that Montresor talks so much about. As he is, he would never allow someone else to have the first delight of tasting this wine (Montresor put it in his head that Luchesi was going to be the indicated) for the same reason, despite his state of clutter, Fortunato was there.
Montresor, being the narrator, indicates that Fortunato began to cough, cough, and cough. He insisted that they turn back, Fortunato being stubborn, asking how much longer it was for them to get to the wine. Fortunato made fun of death by saying that with a cough, he would not die. The bells on his hat continued to ring since he was dressed for a carnival. At this point, they were getting into the catacombs; these are underground passages that belonged to the Montresor family. When they arrive there, they find a crypt, Fortunato continues, and Montresor rushes him to enter. In these crypts, there are human remains. from how drunk Fortunato was, he did not realize what was happening around him. At this point in the story, Montresor offers Fortunato another glass of wine, getting a bottle of Medoc. Stating, “we are below the river’s bed. The drop of moisture trickle among the bones” (pg.3). The author here is describing little by little how they are already in the deepest part and that there is no way out. It is giving you an idea of what might happen or what is going to happen. It describes the crypts, how wide, how dark, and how cold they are. Montresor did not lose sight of Fortunato, by chance, he had his plan. Fortunato kept asking about Amontillado since this was the reason he was there. Montresor began to dig with a trowel that he had; Fortunato ask what is he doing? He sees that empty place; Montresor tells him to get in; he does not know what awaits him. Fortunato with the mentality that he is about to get to where the Amontillado is, gets in the empty space. When Montresor manages to get Fortunato there, he begins to chain him for him not to be able to escape. Fortunato starts to get sober and begins to ask what he is doing? Beginning to lay bricks, Montresor describes how Fortunato starts to complain, and the bricks form a wall. Montresor’s evil and revenge did not end there. Before closing the wall, he throws a torch at it. The moans of Fortunato and the chains along with the bells, are beginning to be heard. Montressor scoffs! Montressor wanting Fortunato to beg and trying to provoke him. His wickedness and achievement of killing everything for the mockery that Fortunato made him. Fortunato had hurt Montresor many times, and he always suffered and remained silent until Fortunato made fun of Montresor’s proud name. “The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction” (pg.4). This here shows how evil Montressor was, no compassion at all, burying someone alive. His vengeance was complete, he had kept this in silent and finally he fulfilled his misery and bullying by killing this man that had trusted him.
“The Cask of Amontillado” and Montresor being the main character of this short story, makes you think. This person was his friend, and he went to not look bad. For the love of wine and for Montresor not to ask someone else for an opinion on the wine tasting, Fortunato lost his life very badly and in the hands of his friend. Edgar Allen Poe, the author, he used these two friends to know that although he is your friend, you cannot trust no one. Fortunato did not expect this. The mockery Fortunato that he made him was perhaps because they were friends and Montesor took it the wrong way. Montesor, at the end the story mention that He was drowned in the sin of his crime for 50 years that he could no more handle it inside his soul. Fortunato will soon be a part of the dark secrets of catacombs, because he died in the hands of the friend he trusted.
